Welcome to How to Start a Medical Podcast where I break down the steps necessary to start a medical podcast into a systems-based approach. My goal for this podcast is to increase the number of medical podcasts available.
My name is Pharmacy Joe. I am a board certified clinical pharmacist and the host of The Elective Rotation – A Critical Care Pharmacy Podcast.

In episode 2 I covered the first, second, and third systems for launching your medical podcast (choosing your podcast topic, equipment and software, and finding content for your podcast).
In this episode I will cover the fourth, fifth, and sixth systems for launching your medical podcast. I’ll discuss the Cardiac system of podcasting (your website and media host which are the heart of your podcast), the Respiratory system of podcasting (where you record and edit your podcast), and the Infectious system of podcasting (where you publish and promote your podcast).
Cardiac system of podcasting
Fourth, the cardiac system of podcasting – the website and media hosting you’ll need for your podcast.
While it is possible to have a podcast without a website, it is something I would not consider. I want my podcast to have a home base, a place I own to have a discussion or share references on. In the 3 page free pdf available at howtostartamedicalpodcast.com, I list the website provider I use and trust.
In addition to your website, you’ll need a place to host your media files. This needs to be separate from your website; hosting your files directly on your own website is usually not allowed by web host providers and it will slow down both your site and the delivery of your podcast to your audience.
Respiratory system of podcasting
Fifth, the respiratory system of podcasting – recording, editing, and tagging your podcast episodes. This is the most simple and straight forward part of making the podcast.
It is as simple as:
1. Speaking into the microphone just as if you were Skyping with someone.
2. Using copy-paste functions in your editing software that are just like using a word processor.
3. Tagging your file with a few basic pieces of information like the title and episode number.
Infectious system of podcasting
Sixth, the infectious system of podcasting – publishing and promoting your podcast. You’ll publish to podcasting directories such as iTunes, Google, and Stitcher. Then you’ll choose social media platforms such as Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook, Pintrest, Instagram, and Google Plus to share your podcast content with your audience.
In the next episode I’ll discuss the most common reasons that hold people back from starting a podcast.
